PRISM Bangladesh
is a non-profit voluntary organization established
in 1989. PRISM has started its initial activities
at Kumudini Hospital Complex Area at Mirzapur,
in collaboration with Kumudini Welfare Trust.
PRISM promotes its research activities on
duckweed and duckweed based pisciculture under
agro sanitation project in KHC financed by
PRISM (Inc.) USA and from own sources. Since
then, PRISM also started its socio-economic
development activities for rural poor community
in different areas of Bangladesh expanding
its area of activities with the help of UN
organizations like UNDP, UNICEF, UNDRO, etc.
Simultaneously, PRISM has been increasing
its development activities implementing various
programs and projects sponsored by many
international and national agencies and organizations.
Since then, PRISM
Bangladesh conducted a lot of research and
implemented huge numbers of programs in development
sectors. PRISM has established high protein
duckweed production both in sweet water and
wastewater with three available duckweed species.
PRISM has also established duckweed as a suitable
fish feed for carp mix culture, high yielding
mix carp culture with local variety of carps,
their ratios and management, wastewater treatment
by duckweed as well as nutrient recovery,
village low cost sanitation and resource recovery,
duckweed as feed stuff for poultry and animal
rearing. PRISM also conducted sustainable
environment management in urban and peri-urban
areas controlling and safe disposal of wastewater
and solid waste involving local communities
and stakeholder.
In the mean time,
PRISM has also implemented a large numbers
of development programs and projects in various
major development sectors like aquaculture,
rural water supply and sanitation, socio economic
development, rural enterprise formation and
capital development, relief and rehabilitation,
disaster preparedness and management, income
generation and self employment, literacy and
non-formal education, environment development
and management, etc. The potential programs
and projects in the above sectors are integrated
aquaculture, duckweed based pisciculture,
duckweed research project, intensive sanitation
and hygiene promotion program, socio economic
development program, non-formal education
program, low cost sanitation and awareness
development, rural water supply, agriculture
rehabilitation and minor irrigation, human
resource development and skill development
training, micro financing/participatory rural
credit and savings program, social forestation,
sustainable environment management program,
etc.
